From Dubbo we made our way to Young via Parkes, Forbes and Grenfell. We took time out to stop at “The Dish” an icon of Australian science at the Parkes Observatory.
The 2001 movie with actor Sam Neil called “The Dish” was based on a true story of the 1969 man’s landing on the moon. During the moon landing NASA had to work with the technicians at Parkes to maintain communication with the astronauts. It still operates 24 hours a day and the day we visited we were lucky to see “The Dish” change directions as part of a controlled instruction given by scientists in a remote location. We were told that people from all over the world book a time to use the radio telescope remotely. Quite amazing when you’re standing right in front of it and you see it start to move. After we pulled ourselves away from such an extraordinary place of significance in history we headed towards our overnight stop in Young.
We spent a night at Young Caravan Park remaining hooked up so we could make an early exit the next morning towards Tumut. The park Manager Garry was so helpful. He has been the only park Manager who took the time to offer directions and a couple of suggestions for Graeme to navigate into the parking area. The Park is clean and well-priced and worth a stop. Also it’s the only Caravan Park in town 🙂
Next Young to Tumut
Well that’s enough for now.
