We are visiting some towns on the Eyre Peninsula that we missed on our trip of Oz last year. We have spent a few nights in Whyalla at the Discovery Parks Caravan Park. The park is situated right on the foreshore and they are offering a great deal at the moment. Stay 4 nights + on a powered site for $25 per night.
For those of you wondering they cater for every type of camping from tents, camper trailers, caravans to large motorhomes. The park is a little dated and some of the sites are a little squeezy if you have a bigger van, the amenities are not new but very clean and tidy. There is a row of waterfront sites but if you want a beachfront spot you need to make sure they don’t park you under one of the low hanging tree.
We loved that we could walk along the foreshore to the marina and enjoyed watching the dolphins frolicking with the boats that were coming back to the boat ramp. The dolphins are always looking for a free feed of fresh fish and will sometimes even splash at the boats to remind the people onboard. There’s a great playground for the kids, a café and lovely grassed areas to sit and enjoy the view. Check out the Diver Sculpture – see our pics.
Whyalla is an early (1900s) steelworks town and is still fully-integrated with many operational plants. There are a few things you can do to entertain yourselves. Like take a guided tour of part of the steelworks, or visit the Maritime museum or enjoy the Whyalla wetlands. Take a drive to Hummock Hill Lookout and enjoy the 360 degree view of Whyalla and the Spencer Gulf, plus you can look over the steelworks plant.
The caravan park has:
🚻Amenities – clean
👕Laundry
🚽Dump Point
🍽2 Camp kitchens
📱TV/Telstra reception
🐶Pet friendly
The older part of town has a lot of great art-deco buildings that would have been awesome in there hay day. You will also find a modern shopping centre a little further out of town that has Coles and Woollies and other brand name stores.
It’s probably not one of the towns we would rush back to. But it was a great stop over and we could stock up on essentials.
