When we first crossed the border from SA into WA on the Nullarbor we had absolutely no idea that it would take us four months to travel through this great State. By the weekend we will have crossed into the Northern Territory and have absolutely loved our time in Western Australia. On this trip we followed the coastline and know we need to come back and explore the inner towns of WA.
Even though we have Wikicamps and CampsAustralia and good old Google I love printed information that I read while we are driving.
This post is about a couple of FREE booklets and maps that we have picked up at Visitor Information Centers on our travels in WA. There are two fantastic pocket books published by Cooks Tours which are updated annually. One is the ‘Amazing North of WA’ and the other is ‘Beautiful South of WA’.
There are some maps at the front of the books which give you an idea of how to plan the route you want to take. Each town has a different colour code and information about the town such as:
- General History
- Population
- Visitor Centre address
- Accommodation
- Attractions
- Climate
- Local Radio Station
Another booklet that Graeme found published by Main Roads Western Australia shows rest areas and roadside amenities along the major roads. There are different routes and for example if you were heading from Port Hedland to Kununurra it gives you the distance guide between stops and also the rest areas with symbols stating what is available. For instance if it is a 24Hr stop, has toilets, dump point, BBQ’s, picnic table, wheelchair access and shelters.
The best part is all of the above are FREE from any Visitor Information Centre and have been extremely handy to have in the car. Oh and don’t forget to pick up your State map along with the larger brochure book for different regions.
Thanks WA we have loved our stay, you are amazing.
Well that’s enough for now.
