Tannum Sands – Qld

Isn’t it funny what we conjure up in our minds when we’re driving to a place we have never been before? 🤔Well, I guess I got this one wrong as I never expected Tannum Sands to be such a large modern town, and I must say it is absolutely beautiful. 👌 Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the bush and exploring, but I really do believe my heart 💙 is near the ocean. There is nothing like a brisk morning walk along the beach and looking out to sea while the gentle ocean breezes bring a freshness to your thoughts.

👉We stayed at Discovery Parks which is situated along Millenium Esplanade beside the quiet waters of Wild Cattle Creek. The Park has everything you need. 👍

📍Nice big roomy powered and unpowered sites.  📍Pool, 📍pet friendly, 📍two good size clean amenity blocks, 📍dump point, 📍laundry, 📍camp kitchen, 📍sheltered BBQs, 📍TV reception but you do need to be connected to the park’s system and if you don’t have a cable, you can put a deposit down for one.

👉Right across the road from the caravan park is a wonderful flat walking path. Our days have been spent taking the 5km walk to Canoe Point and returning back along the beach to enjoy some sea shell and general fossicking. We also did the longer walk of 9km return to the Boyne River bridge and back a few times.

👉Make sure you take the steps up to the lookout which you will find near the Tannum Sands Surf Club. The view from the lookout is quite spectacular. Looking out to sea it is amazing to see the amount of commercial shipping waiting for the loading of their cargo from the Port of Gladstone. The port is Queensland’s largest multi-commodity port, handling over 30 different products. The major cargoes include coal, bauxite, alumina, aluminum, cement and Liquefied Natural Gas. No wonder there are always so many ships out there.

👉We took a drive into Gladstone and again I was very impressed. The parks and gardens along the marina and port area are absolutely beautiful. We chose to enjoy lunch and a 2.5 km walk along the ocean wall, through wetlands and parks. There is also a beach cove if you feel inclined to have a dip.

👉Just 30 kms inland on the Boyne River from Gladstone is Lake Awoonga. Yep, another beaut place to visit. Whether you’re into fishing, walking, kayaking or just relaxing. The lake is a working dam supplying water to the whole region.

👉We also checked out the river camp at Calliope. It’s a special place for us as we have stayed there a couple of times during recent Queensland adventures. It’s a place we will be overnighting once we set off again in the New Year. You can check out our recent stays here Calliope.
