We spent a couple of days exploring Robe, South Australia. Robe is a great beachside town, along the Limestone Coast. From what we saw we can only imagine how busy the seaside town would be in Summer School Holiday time.
Robe Caravan Park
Our choice of Caravan Park was Robe Holiday Park which is one of the Kui Parks group. The sites are large and grassy with beaut shady areas. The amenities are like having your own ensuite. Each cubicle has a toilet and shower and are kept very clean. There seems to be plenty of room for everyone no matter what sort of camping you are into. However Keryn (owner with her husband Anthony and busy Mum of 4 boys – 9, 7, 5 and 3) told us that come Christmas time the park is generally totally booked. So it’s a good idea to book ahead at this time. Kui Park members receive the usual 10% discount.
Beaches, Seafood, Shopping and History
The Park is not far from beautiful beaches and the main street of town. Town in itself has lots of unique boutique stores which may entice those who are after a little retail therapy while travelling on the road. You will also find the usual cafes, pub and a Supermarket.
We absolutely loved the beaches and sandy coves that are hidden between the sculptured limestone headlands. On the foreshore you will find a Chinese Arch. This Arch is recognition of the amazing journey of over 16,500 Chinese who sailed from China, landed at Robe and walked approximately 320 kms to the Victorian goldfields between 1857 and 1863. Wow
This was also the area where scientific explorers and chart makers Matthew Flinders and Nicholas Badin’s voyages overlapped. They met in Encounter Bay, Robe South Australia. They went on to charter several sections of the coast, and today many places bear names bestowed by one or other as a result of their expeditions.
Robe is renowned for its fresh fish and as we could not catch any ourselves we decided to head to Sky Seafood’s Robe. We found it by accident and were told later by Keryn that it’s a place she would recommend for fresh fish. Anyway we bought some local Queen Snapper one day and went back the next and bought some Blue Groper and had our fill of fresh fish fillets. Yum both were delicious.
Another great seaside town with lots of history. Thanks Robe
