Port MacDonnell is in South Australia and is the Southern Rock Lobster Capital – Lobsters yum yum.
It took us about half an hour to drive from Mount Gambier to Port MacDonnell. What a great place. We found two awesome 24 hour free camps for self-contained caravans and other RVs, and had we known this, we would have brought the van with us. But we had unhooked our van at Pine Country Caravan Park on the edge of Mount Gambier so that we could do some sightseeing drives.
The Customs House building was built in 1863 and served as the local police station and residence, cells, court house, Harbour Masters office and of course custom house for many years. There are some great murals and sculptures throughout the town and we loved the rather large Penguins.
Unfortunately we did not get to see any little Penguins at Cape Northumberland , but we thoroughly enjoyed the uninterrupted views of this rugged coastline. There are some wonderful natural coastal carvings which just take your breath away.
Sadly we did not get to take any Rock Lobster home with us. At $100 a kilo in the shell we gave it a miss.
