Normanton – Qld

Travelling along the Savannah Way we had the pleasure of stopping for a night at Normanton. At this point we were headed for Karumba for a few nights and had a night to fill in. Glad we decided to stop in Normanton as we loved it so much that we decided to book in for another couple of nights on the way back from Karumba.

Normanton Main Street

Normanton is full of old world charm and started life as a port for the Gulf of Carpentaria’s cattle industry and also became of importance after the discovery of gold at Croydon in 1885.

The Normanton Town Walk is a great way to find out about the history of the town. It takes in around 30 places of historic interest around town and each location is easily identified with a sign outside with the most interesting information. Besides the town walk enjoy the unique buildings in town  including the ‘Purple Pub’, and the ‘Albion Hotel’. Another iconic building is the lime green building which happens to be a local butcher ‘Gallagher’s’. We couldn’t leave town without spending a few dollars with them.

The Big Crocodile

You can’t pass through Normanton without having your photo taken with Krys – The Savannah King. This croc is unique as it is said that this is an exact replica of the huge croc, 8.63 metres. It was shot by professional crocodile hunter, Krystyna Pawlowski in July, 1957 on the MacArthur Bank, in the Norman River downstream from Normanton.  The crocodile was shot on the MacArthur Bank, Norman River, downstream from Normanton in July, 1957. The woman who shot it was a professional on crocodile hunter.

Normanton Tourist Park

We stayed at the Normanton Tourist Park which boasts to have the largest resort pool in the North West of Queensland. It certainly didn’t disappoint us. What made it even better was the beautiful manicured very green grass around the outside of the pool. Being so hot it was truly pleasing to the eye. We were lucky to have a site right opposite the pool. At the time we visited in early July, 2017 the price for a powered site was $34 per night. Discounts do apply if you have a seniors card. The Manager of the park was also extremely helpful.
