Hi Everyone,
The remnants of Cyclone Debbie changed our plans as to where we would stay as we started to make our way back to Coffs Harbour from Mudgee. The weather man had issued a couple of storm warnings for the next few days. So we decided to travel through the Hunter Valley to avoid the trip down Dorrigo Mountian and headed towards Singleton. We thought we could sit out the wild weather for a couple of nights before continuing our trip back to Coffs. We arrived at Singleton early in the afternoon and decided to keep moving towards Karuah. Both of us were so absolutely over the moon that we made this decision and when we arrived at the Big 4 park in Karuah we both let out a ‘woop woop’.
Anyway we stayed here for a few nights and battened down as we dealt with the wild stormy, windy weather on the Wednesday night. On the Saturday we left Karuah and made our way to Bonny Hills Big 4 caravan park. This must have been one of the best parks we stayed at on this short three and a half week round trip.
We arrived around lunch time and the park was abuzz with families, a wedding about to happen, kids having fun on pedal carts and in the pool, and the local lizard came over to say hello. The spot we were allocated was fantastic to park the Jayco. It was spacious and had plenty of room for the Jeep to park next door and also enough room between other campers and caravanners. it was a great level artificial turfed lawn area.
Hearing the sound of the ocean was great and we had fun exploring the surrounding areas for the next few days. We went shopping in Port Macquarie, and walked the beach several times and found some amazing pathways to walk along which made you feel like you were heading into a secret garden. We met some wonderful people including the owners of Ivanhoe Wines in the Hunter Valley who came over one evening with a delicious bottle of their Shiraz/Cabernet.
We did not want to leave but other commitments are calling us back to Coffs, so we need to go back home and then in May we will be off again. This time with the mind set of going with the flow and see where we end up. We thought we would pass on our personal thoughts about the parks that we stayed in. On Average we spent approximately $30-32 per night for a powered site in the parks. This was is mainly due to the fact that we are members of the major caravan parks.
Bonny Hills – Great WiFi, Clean bathrooms (the best), large sites, family friend, close to beach.
Karuah – Great WiFi , Clean bathrooms, close to the waters of Port Stevens.
Mudgee – Some concrete slabs, but we stayed on a grassed area, lots of trees, bathrooms are average and need some attention, dump point is quite far away from the caravan powered sites.
Tumut – Very large park with gorgeous Poplar Trees everywhere. Even luckier if you can get a site over looking the Tumut River. Bathrooms were clean . Our site was in a grassed leafy area but it was a big site for us.
Young – perfect for a one night stay. Friendly owner operated clean park.
Lake Keepit – Has some really nice concrete slab sites, you just need to be lucky to get one. Clean bathrooms. Beautiful views of the Lake.
Jindabyne – Concrete slabs overlooking the Lake Jindabyne. The bathrooms are old and need an upgrade, and possibly that is on the cards as they were already working and building a new improved sauna.
Armidale – very average in all areas. Good for a one night stop.
Dubbo – Sites are very close together, and quite muddy if its been raining, bathrooms average but clean. Great for those wanting to go to the Zoo.
Cowra – Our first adventure of ‘free camping’ – great little spot.
