Mount Barker – South Australia

Our stay in Mount Barker, South Australia saw us go through extreme changes in temperature. The day we arrived the weather was quite cool, but then the temperatures quickly escalated to around 35 for the next couple of days. But after those couple of hot days it plummeted back to temperatures below 20 with storms and gusty winds. Talk about four seasons in one day!!!

Besides the incredible change in weather conditions we loved Mount Barker. It’s approximately 39 kilometres from Adelaide. We chose Mount Barker as we wanted to take some time enjoying the surrounding Adelaide Hills. We stayed at the Mount Barker Caravan Park and found this park had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. There are quite a few gravel sites, including some larger drive-thru sites. The grounds are well cared for and the 2 amenity blocks super clean. This place is very quiet and has a wonderful peaceful feel about it. We happened to have another Jayco on one side and an awesome looking fifth wheeler on the other side.

The park Managers Wayne and Kylie are wonderful hosts and made sure that our stay was enjoyable by advising us on some great places to visit during our stay.

Shopping in Mount Barker

Mount Barker was also a great stop to stock up yet again on fresh food and other items, as we make our way across to the Yorke Peninsula. Within walking distance from the park you will find all the shopping you need. Kmart, Priceline, Coles, Woolies, Aldi some great fresh fruit markets and so much more including Bunnings, Spotlight, BCF.

There’s also a Dan Murphy’s in town but it’s probably best to drive as it would be a bit of walk back to the park. Across the road from Dan Murphy’s you will find a brand new Foodland store. We couldn’t resist to take a walk through and ‘Wow’ what a great store. The presentation of produce in the fresh vegie section looked like a Rural Show exhibit. As did the fresh food market next to Woollies.

The main street of Mount Barker is filled with the usual boutiques, cafes, restaurants and pubs. On one of outings we stopped at Millie’s Bakery which serves delicious fresh baked goodies. We thoroughly enjoyed our Mocha and bite to eat.

Mount Barker is just a short drive 10-15 minute drive to the beautiful village of Hahndorf which is well worth a visit which I have mentioned in a previous post. After visiting Hahndorf we continued on a little further along the scenic drive to Mount Lofty and the botanical gardens. At Mount Lofty there is a wonderful lookout with views over most of the Adelaide region.

Hahndorf

Everything you could possibly think of is available in Mount Barker. After all it is the largest town in the Adelaide hills and it’s not surprising that it is becoming one of the fastest growing areas.

Well that’s enough for now.
