MECKERING – WA

Approximately 133kms East of Perth is the now small hamlet of Meckering. It used to be a busy Wheatbelt town until hit by a devastating earth quake on October 14th, 1968. The earthquake registered 6.9 on the Richter scale, destroying 50 homes and many of the town buildings including the impressive two storied town Hotel. Just west of the town on the highway the earthquake fault line is crossed.

They say you remember where you were when things happen in the world. Like man landing on the moon or the 911 attacks……..well I remember being a young girl living in Perth with my sister and parents. That’s how far and wide the tremors of the quake were felt. It was quite scary at the time.

Anyway we stopped in Meckering on our way to Perth to also check out and take a pic of ‘The Big SLR Camera’. Inside is a museum displaying all sorts of equipment pertaining to cameras and also information about the Earthquake. Unfortunately we could not find anyone around and it seemed closed.

The over night rest area looked great. Nice and flat and plenty of room to park up. It’s situated next to the Meckering Rose Garden.

💲This is a great overnighter that Meckering have created for travellers. Please make sure you donate.
🚻Nice clean toilets.
🚽Dump point.
☕️Coltons Cafe
⛽️Fuel Station
🛒Grocery and hardware store which seemed to have a diminishing stock of groceries.

An interpretation on the impact of the earthquake plus a piece of the Perth to Kalgoorlie pipeline is on display in the park next to the amenities.

Thanks Meckering.
