It was about 2pm and we were happy with the thought of setting up early. The day was hot and when we arrived there were loads of people enjoying the Lakeside park. It was great to see.
Being a bit lazy, and with the intention of leaving early the next morning, we thought we would take a drive-through site with power and water. Our allocated site was still occupied by a lovely family who were spending the weekend at the Lake. When they realised we were the next occupants they quickly packed up and apologised for the wait. That was not a problem for us and we took the opportunity to go and have a wonder around. It was a very hot afternoon and lots of families were enjoying the day by the Lake with BBQ’s, Birthday parties and loads of water activates.
When our designated site was cleared we prepared to move in. Would you believe that after an hour or more we still were not settled. It would have to be one of the worst drive through sites imaginable for us newbies. The area was very uneven and sloped in two different directions. As much as we tried we could not get the van level. Trying hard to keep it together, despite the heat of the afternoon, we helped each other without too much irritation getting the better of us.
It did not help that several park visitors who were obviously enjoying the afternoon were amused by our efforts. To top it off a green ant bit my foot and it stung like hell. Luckily there was a tap nearby where I could cool my stinging foot before getting back to giving directions. “Back, forward, on the chocks, off the chocks, watch the tree, STOP”. Graeme was still not happy for the Jayco to be at such an unlevel angle and in the end we looked across from where we were and smiled at each other and said let’s move over to the concrete slab. So the plan of not unhitching went by the way side and we were parked and level in only a few moments.
Once everything was as we thought it should be we sat down and enjoyed a cold beverage or too and some delicious BBQ lamp chops and roast vegies that we cooked in our little convection oven outside. That was our Sunday roast of sorts and the wafting smell drove our neighbors crazy.
During the night thunderstorms rolled in close to where we were camping. The next morning the weather report was for severe thunderstorms coming across the central West of NSW the direction we were heading into. So we decided to stay and wait for the storms to clear.
Yesterday afternoon there were some very close lightning strikes and the power went out for a few hours. Luckily for us the Jayco house batteries kicked in. We are now hoping to leave Lake Keepit on Wednesday after one night has turned into three.
While here we have enjoyed the local kangaroos and watching a group of parasailers/gliders on a training course. It has been great that we are able to connect to Telstra 4G Wi-Fi which we travel with, as this park has no internet for guests.
