It was a long drive from our overnight stop at Mary Pool, beside the Mary River, because along the way we stopped in to look at a couple of the free camps so we can share what they are like with you and other travellers.
When we drove into Kununurra our first impressions were good. We headed straight to the Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park where we had decided to stay and were greeted by the lovely Lyndall at reception. It’s always nice to have a warm welcome from someone who has time to help answer your questions and understands the needs of a traveller.
This is an awesome park. We scored a grassed site with a view over the Lily Creek Lagoon. In front of our site is a large grassed shared area where many weary travellers pull up their chairs to enjoy the cool of the evening.
The park is large and lies beside the Lily Creek Lagoon and Lake Kununurra. The abundance of birdlife is awesome and not to mention the resident fresh water crocodiles. The bugs may be annoying at night but if you have your mozzie coil and turn out the lights it’s not too bad. For the moment the days are quite warm at around 35c but also comfortable as a light easterly breeze often drifts over the area .The evenings are very comfortable and are starting to get cooler.
The evening after we arrived the park had a special opening of 4 beautiful cabins on the waterfront. As we sat outside our van with our drinks in hand we were encouraged to feel as though we were a part of the great ambiance of the opening ceremony. A little later we decided to walk over to ask more about these new cabins. Wow, wow and wow. Ok so we are travelling with a caravan, but for those who travel and want to stay in cabin accommodation we feel you should take a look at these.
The detail that has gone into each cabin is well worth mentioning. So if you are a couple, family or have a disability this is the place that caters for all. These are super modern style cabins with awesome views to the Lake through aptly placed floor to ceiling glass doors and windows. Each cabin has a self-contained kitchen which even includes a coffee pod machine and dishwasher. Talk about luxury, wow. You can see we are travelling in a van. The alfresco deck has a BBQ and a daycare bed where you can sit and enjoy the views. Great job everyone these are really fantastic cabins. The prices range from $250 – $280 per night depending on the season.
Ok so what else does the park have for caravanners and campers:
• Onsite Café – gotta love this – “Spilled the Beans”
• Clean and inviting swimming pool
• Free Wi-Fi
• Modern camp kitchen
• 3 Clean modern amenity blocks (with disabled facilities)
• Laundries
• Grassy shaded sites
• 2 Dump points
• Powered and unpowered sites
• No pets – sorry
• Great mobile phone and TV reception
Besides all of the above it’s close to town and shopping. The town centre has a Coles, pharmacy, bakery, liquor store and a great Butcher woohoo……we love our local Butchers. So make sure you check out Tenderspot Meat Company situated at 1/1 Ebony Street, Kununurra.
Something you may not know is that the liquor stores have restrictions for everyone. Generally we buy wine casks for the practicality of storage and we have proven the nicer ones are OK for travelling. But in Kununurra you cannot get any wine casks. You can however buy 3 bottles of wine and a carton of beer a day per person with approved ID such as a driver’s license. Prices for alcohol are hit and miss here and we are guessing you need to get in early to get the specials as they had all disappeared when we went shopping.
