Kununurra – Bungle Bungles – WA

If you’re heading to WA and happen to be in the East Kimberley area around April then you might be interested in this fabulous tour we took. I say April as currently the Kimberley is going into the wet season and many tour operators take a break.

Flying over the Carr Boyd Ranges

Our tour was with Aviair – a 4 hour tour taking in an areoplane flight, 30 minute helicopter flight and then back on the plane to Kununurra. What an absolutely fabulous way to see this wonderful country. Don’t get me wrong, being on the ground touring is awesome too. But in this region a bird’s eye view is breathtaking. From above you can actually appreciate the great expanse of the area.

We were picked up by bus from Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park where we stayed for our time in Kununurra and headed to the airport. We departed from Kununurra and flew over the Ord River Diversion Dam and Lake Kununura and then on to the huge expanse of Lake Argyle. We headed over the Carr Boyd Ranges and eventually landed at the remote unsealed Purnululu airfield. Wohoo, Bec what a great smooth landing. Thumbs up.

This is where Bec left us for a while as we made our way to the office and were greeted by the helicopter crew. We were checked in and offered a coffee or tea before being designated our helicopters. While waiting we were given another informative commentary about our flight over the Purnululu National Park and Bungle Bungle Range.

Front row seat in the chopper 🙂

Each helicopter carries four people, the pilot, and three guests and the flight takes around 30 minutes. All seats have great views. I was so lucky to score a seat next to the pilot. Oh just to let you know, there are no doors on these helicopters, so make sure that you bring a jacket as it can get quite cool up there. After we were securely strapped in with headphones in place we took off.

The flight takes you around the Bungle Bungle area and Chris our helicopter pilot was a wealth of information. I have never seen anything like this and I believe that having this bird’s eye helicopter view of the Bungle Bungle Range gave us a different perspective of how naturally magnificent this part of the country is. The landforms of the Bungle Bungle Range are spectacular and how special it was to see the hidden red rock gorges of the northwest tip and also the unique beehive formations.

Once back at Bellburn airfield we were ready to board the aeroplane for the return trip over the Osmand Range and Argyle Diamond Mine. The Argyle Diamond Mine looked very impressive. The rest of the flight home was a time to enjoy the stunning views. Although you can drive into the Bungle Bungle area we are very happy we waited to experience this tour to fly over these majestic formations to give us a greater insight into “The Kimberley” region.
