Could this be the last country pub you see in the NT? Or maybe it’s the first pub you see during your travels into the NT? Whichever way you look at it ‘Kulgera Roadhouse’ is well worth a stop as it’s a little gem of a place in the outback.
Situated 20km from the NT/SA Border it’s a popular spot to fuel up. We had been driving into head winds 🌬 all morning and our fuel ⛽️ consumption had been a little excessive so Graeme suggested we top up. We think we may have found the winner for the ‘most expensive diesel ’ on this lap of Oz at $1.99…..But that’s what happens when you don’t have a choice and too many kms to travel before the next roadhouse.
Kulgera started as a cattle 🐂 station in 1927 selling fuel to passing traffic. The story goes that the fuel was sent by rail then picked up with a donkey and wagon and stored underground. In 1954 the store was built and later a homestead.
This place has a few quirky things like ‘The Big Can’, a ‘Shoe Stand’🥿👟👡🥾 but make sure you check inside the bar where special items of clothing hang from the ceiling. The bar seems to have obviously been frequented by many a happy female from the memento’s left behind😉. There’s also an art gallery 🎨 within the roadhouse with lots of local art to enjoy and buy.
Make sure you say hello to the ‘old bastard’ who is with his 🤠🐶 dog beside the shed out the back. It would surprise me if you get any response from him.
There’s also a caravan and camping ground area for weary travellers offering power and water and it looked pretty good to us.
