The Big Strawberry
We had a great overnight stay at “The Big Strawberry”, Koonoomoo, about 10 kms into Victoria from Tocumwal. You can find them on Wiki Camps. When we drove in we were very impressed with the large flat area available for self-contained caravans. Plenty of room for everyone. Toilets are available during café/store opening hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.). No water or dump point and power is limited and available for $10. Great TV reception.
As you walk around you can smell the sweet fresh smell of the strawberry patches. If you’re a strawberry lover then this is a must stop, even if you’re not staying overnight. The store is large and comfortable even on a hot day and has a huge range of different condiments, jams, chutneys wines and liqueurs. Also a large range of strawberry souvenirs. Better still is picking your own fresh strawberries at $15 kilo. Just make sure you let the friendly staff know and when you are finished they will weight them for you.
It was just after lunch time when we arrived and we were a tad peckish so we enjoyed a light meal from the café’s quite extensive menu, the café also serves some wonderful looking strawberry ice creams, smoothies and pancakes and much much more.
Make sure you also check out “The Man Cave” museum. It’s pretty impressive with lots of boy’s toys memorabilia like the Corvette Stingray and small motor bikes. But ladies don’t despair there loads of strawberry retro kitchen memorabilia and more. Something for everyone to enjoy.
Kids are well looked after here too. The Big Strawberry has not one but two indoor playgrounds. The playground for up to 3 year olds is free while a fee of $5 is charged for 4 – 12 year olds. Socks must be worn at all times. Parents travelling with kids can find an enjoyable space to sit and be near the kids while they play in a safe environment.
We had a great time chatting with Michael and his son Darren Hayes the founders of “The Big Strawberry”. Even though they were busy working in and around the grounds, nothing seemed too much for them to deal with.
Fresh jams are made each week and there is a great viewing window near “The Man Cave”. Great to see that they have won some awards for their jams and condiments.
It’s always good to have a walk and do some exercise after being in the car for a while. Right next door to The Big Strawberry is a great walking track with some interesting information. Just before sunset was a beautiful time to take a walk.
