If you have been following our travels you will know that we finally left Western Australia after four wonderful months and have headed into the top end of the ‘Northern Territory’ and more croc country.
The ever changing landscape is something to behold. We never expected to see such brilliant red rock escarpments and jaw dropping landscape that seemed to stretch for many kilometres along the way and this in turn made us stop at every photo opportunity.
We stayed in Katherine, approximately 320 kms southeast of Darwin and it’s situated on the Katherine River which flows through the centre of town. We ended up staying for a few days as there is so much to see and do.
They say it’s where the outback meets the tropics. Currently it is the start of the ‘Dry Season’ and we can’t begin to tell you how magnificent the weather is. Beautiful warm sunny days at around 30c and then cool evenings and evener cooler mornings. We are thoroughly enjoying the cooler evenings after spending a day exploring local attractions.
We stayed at the Shady Lane Tourist Park which is a little out of the main town centre along the road that takes you to Katherine Gorge. The park is extremely peaceful and is just lovely, accept for a few bats at night.
• The sites are large and shady and the amenities are very clean and modern
• Telstra and Digital TV reception
• Camp kitchen
• BBQ’s.
• Dump point.
• Laundry
• Disabled access
• Self-contained studio cabins.
A powered and water site is $44 per night and this is a standard price all year round with no discounts, but it was well worth it. The family who run the park are wonderful and will go over and beyond the call of duty to make your stay comfortable.
So the next day we ventured out to visit some of the hot spots including Katherine Hot Springs. The water is crystal clear and looked very inviting, but unfortunately being a Sunday it was also very busy. Next we ventured into the quite modern town centre.
First stop was the Katherine Visitor Centre where we picked up maps and other information for our further travels. As we were in town we decided to do some shopping. Woolworths, Brumby Bakery, Amcal Pharmacy, Target Country along with other stores are available.
Another day we spent in the Nitmiluk National Park where Katherine Gorge is located. For us it was only a short drive from the caravan park along sealed roads. The Nitmiluk National Park Visitor Centre had all the information that we required to go off and explore. There are 13 natural gorges which are carved through sandstone by the Katherine River. The walking trails are well marked and lead to various waterfalls and lookouts. Pretty awesome.
On our last day we took a tour called Katherine Outback Experience which we had been told by the lady who helped us at the Katherine Visitor Centre is an awesome experience. That’s coming on our next post as we really want to share the photos and experience because yes it was awesome. Stay tuned.
