Our travel through the ‘Savannah Way” found conversation with other travellers often centred on the area of Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria. We decided to see what our chances were of booking into one of the very popular caravan parks.
“Ay caramba!”
How lucky are we? Scored 3 nights, at Karumba Sunset Point Caravan Park. A powered site was $43 per night and it was well worth every cent. Just to be able to say “yes we have been to Karumba”.
All sorts of travelling rigs from tents to swags on the ground to giant fifth wheelers packed the caravan park sites. Normanton was very busy but Karumba was ridiculously busy.
Fishing in Karumba
One of the main attractions to Karumba is it’s fishing, and quite honestly it’s about all there is to do. About 50 boat trailers were parked at the boat ramp one morning at 11 am and there were still heaps sitting on vehicles in the parking lot.
Graeme tried his hand at beach fishing a couple of times, but to no avail. Some of the locals had mentioned to us that the fish had not been biting lately. It was also suggested that the best way to catch a fish was to go out on one of the fishing boat charters. That sounded like a good idea, but we were running out of time.
The next best thing to get a feed of fish was to check out the local fish and chips store down the road. Ash’s was recommended to us by a few people. We headed off along the foreshore towards the Tavern. The foreshore has some interesting rock formations and the beach is covered with lots of shells. The water looked beautiful. Pity about the crocodiles in the water as some spots look like a beautiful place for a swim.
Karumba Sunsets
They say that outback sunsets are absolutely beautiful. Luckily we have managed to see a couple. This was one of the best. It was quick to see that many other people had the same thought about watching the sunset from the Tavern. Make sure you arrive early to get a good view. Luckily we did.
We had a great time in Karumba and it’s another place we can tick off our bucket list.
