Horrocks – WA

Horrocks, Western Australia is a well-hidden coastal hamlet between Geraldton and Kalbarri. The moment you make the descent to Horrocks you will notice the glorious ocean views which instantly make you feel like you’re on holidays. It’s nestled along some lovely white sandy beaches with sheltered waters, rock pools and waves along the reefs. Here you can fish, swim, go snorkelling, diving or just enjoy walking along the beach.

Horrocks Beach and Jetty

At Horrocks we had two firsts. One eating fresh mullet caught right of the beach. The second was that we saw our first snake at close quarters while walking.

During one of our beach walks we watched a local family fishing with a net right off the beach. It was pretty awesome to watch but unfortunately their haul only saw them bringing in 2 fish. As we kept walking Graeme pointed out the many schools of mullet that were so close to the shore. It was an extremely hot morning and so refreshing to walk through the cool waters around the ragged shorelines.

On our way back to the caravan park the family fishing had just come into shore and Graeme told them about the large schools of fish a little further along the beach. They thanked him and immediately took off to see if they could catch some. We followed them and watched as they scored a wonderful catch. We counted about 20 beautiful mullet and they seemed extremely happy. Oh and by the way in WA you are required to have a special license to catch fish with a net like they were doing. They told us that they could catch 30 each.

So this is how we landed our first fish caught off the beach. They were eager to share with us and gave us two lovely mullet to take home and enjoy. Thanks guys they were delicious.

Another morning Graeme spotted a young Gwarder (or) Western Brown snake. It has a distinctive black head and we were told that it is widespread through two-thirds of Australia and is highly venomous and extremely dangerous. All I could think of was it may be a young one but let’s get away from it, cause Mumma might be around somewhere………I don’t like snakes and am happy to get right of their way.

Horrocks has one caravan park “Horrocks Beach Caravan Park”. The park has some great shady grassed sites, older but clean amenities, camp kitchen, dump point, TV reception and is dog friendly. We were told the Park owner has some big plans for future upgrading of the facilities and camp areas. It’s a Top Caravan Park so members receive discounts.

It’s also close to the beach and jetty and the only store and fuel outlet in town. The “General Store” is well stocked but I would suggest that you make sure you stock up on meat, fruit and vegies before heading here as prices are quite high.

There is an IGA in Northampton about 30kms away, read previous post, if like us you are heading further north and want to stock up.
