What a great village to visit. It’s not surprising that this is a favourite tourism hotspot in South Australia. Hahndorf is said to be Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement which started way back in 1839.
Even though it was a Monday the village was abuzz with people from all walks of life and countries. I just loved the atmosphere of Hahndorf as there are so many boutique and unique store. When we visited many were decorated with wonderful Christmas decorations. Everywhere you look along the Main Street you see lush green grass and dense foliage from 100 year old Elm trees.
There are German pubs/restaurants and cafes to tantalise your taste buds. The smells coming from the Harris Smokehouse beside the Hahndorf Inn absolutely sent our hunger pangs crazy. Graeme loved stopping into the many gourmet stores to buy some delicious “Hot” German sausage. Besides all sorts of German sausages you can enjoy the biggest Pretzels or sauerkraut, German beers, cheese, chocolates and more.
By now we were starting to get a little peckish so we decided on sharing a taste platter for two filled with German Sausages, Sauerkraut and Mustard at the Hahndorf Inn. A German beer would have topped it off nicely, but as we were still continuing our drive through the Adelaide Hills, we gave it a miss. The platter was delicious and just enough for lunch and I am glad we did not decide on individual meals.
The plate servings are huge and I could see many people struggled to get through a whole meal. Unfortunately this left a lot of wasted food on tables which also attracted a few flies. As mentioned before, this place was very busy and maybe they did not have enough staff to come and collect the ‘not so empty plates’. Ok that’s my little winge.
Beerenberg Family Farm
Only a few minutes from Hahndorf is Beerenberg Family Farm which is well worth a visit. The farm was founded in 1839 and today the same piece of land continues to be farmed. If you love strawberries you will love this place. The Farm Store has all sorts of delicious jams and condiments and other interesting things.
As we stepped out of the Jeep our nostrils were filled with the wonderful smell of cooking onions. As we found out on entering the premises this was the batch of the day being cooked. Spicy BBQ Caramelised Onion Chutney. The smell was so awesome we bought a jar and also some Red Wine and Garlic Mustard. I don’t think they are going to last long in our van as they will be consumed in no time. For those wanting fresh strawberries you can pay a fee to go and pick your own before you leave.
Well that’s enough for now.
