After being disappointed about not staying at Avon Downs Rest Area (read our previous post) near the NT border because of the filth that littered the place we were so extremely happy that we ploughed on and crossed into Queensland. We stopped at Gunpowder about 50 kms from Mount Isa. Wow how good was this!? This particular 24 hour overnight rest area is called the WWII Memorial Site.
It is suitable for any size rig as it has plenty of room for everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here even though it is all red dirt. There are unofficial fire pits everywhere; of course they should only to be used when there is no fire risk. There are some undercover picnic tables and other BBQ areas a little closer to the road for anyone who wants to use these them. Apart from that there are four flushable toilets. There is also a dump point, but there is no water to rinse your canister.
The area where we decided to park was far enough away from the highway to enjoy our night without traffic noise, even though the passing trucks don’t normally worry us. When we arrived around 3.30 pm there were already a few vans and other RVs around and as the evening went on the place got quite busy yet there was still plenty of room for more travellers to stop and stay.
Thank you Queensland what an awesome stop.
