Initially we thought to stop in Griffith, do some shopping and stay at the town free camp overnight before heading on. However, with the weather forecast predicting temperatures soaring to 35 and higher each day we decided that we would pull up somewhere with power so that we could turn the air-con on and at least have a bit of respite from the heat.
This now gave us the chance to unhook and check out Griffith and surrounding areas. Two nights led to six. There is so much to see and do in this region that instead of putting it all into one post there will be several. Let’s start with where we stayed.
We found two free camps and a very low cost camp in and around Griffith.
1. Griffith Boat Club is situated on Lake Wyangan. Wow for 10 (concession rate) a night we had power, flushing toilets and water for showers and a view of the Lake. You need to bring your own drinking water. Our tanks were full and we were not going to worry about connecting to the water, but of course we decided to stay longer than intended. So we connected to the water for washing dishes and showers and just used our tanks for drinking and cooking.
Thanks Lorraine and Dave you do an awesome job keeping the grounds mowed and green and the amenities clean. This was a fabulous stay and gave us the opportunity to explore the town of Griffith and surrounding areas.
🔌 Power
📱 Excellent TV and Telstra reception
🥩 Great BBQ areas right on foreshore of the Lake
🚻 Toilets and shower – The amenities are quite old, but the wonderful caretakers keep them very clean.
🚮 Bins
❌ No Dump Point – but there is one in town at the free camp.
❌ No drinking water.
❌ No pets
🚤 Boat ramp
2. Lake Wyangan Free Camp
A little further down the road from where we stayed you will find an absolutely free camp right on the Lake. Toilets 🚻are available and there’s a BBQ 🥩area with plenty of bins 🚮 around to keep the place tidy. ❌No power and ❌ no drinking water available and ❌no pets.
There is plenty of room for big rigs with easy access for all. There were only a couple of campers here when we visited. Lots of red earth and some green grass. You can stay here for a maximum of 3 days.
3. Willow Park Rest Area
This is a 24 hour free camp which looks wonderful and is within walking distance from town. The sign says “Maximum 24 hour stay for self-contained Motorhomes only” and “Strictly no camping”. We were a little confused with this sign and asked at the Visitor Information Centre did this mean no caravans? They advised us that caravans and motorhomes were allowed but absolutely no campers. I guess whoever is in charge of the park doesn’t check very often. There were a couple of campers who seem to have out stayed their welcome by the way the grass had grown and the rubbish was left lying around the cars.
But all in all well done Griffith 👏 for providing such a great spot for an overnight stop with a 🚽dump point, 🚰drinking water, 🚻toilets and 🚮BBQs in 🌳🌳pleasant surroundings and pet friendly.
In our next couple of posts we will share with you what we did in and around Griffith.
