What can we say but WOW another great overnight stop was had at Fraser Range Station. We left Eucla at 5.30 am and already the temperature was around 29C. The weather forecast suggested the temperature would be up to 45C so we were glad to get on the road early, as were many of the other travellers. It was also Graeme’s birthday, and what a different way to spend your 69th birthday driving the Nullarbor 😘🤗.
There was no way we were going to miss the sign “90 Mile Straight – Australia’s Longest Straight Road – 146.6 km”. We found it at a fuel stop just outside of Caiguna. We stopped a few times in different places and had a little fun too. After all it was Graeme’s birthday. We loved how there are several emergency landing strips for the “Royal Flying Doctor”. Thankfully when we took these pics there was no emergency and no traffic so we were free to have a play.
After reaching Balladonia we decided to head on to Fraser Range Station on the Western end of the Nullarbor and we are so glad we did. You won’t miss it as there are several signs along the way to let you know where to go. All the sites are drive thru, level and very private as each is separated with bushes. The amenities are clean and the showers are coin operated. The price for a powered site with water is $30 per night. This is a standard price all year round. If you feel like a home cook meal, then head on over to the kitchen and enjoy whatever the meal of the evening is plus desert. The camp kitchen is pretty cool too.
Fraser Range Station does not take caravan bookings as there is always plenty of room. Again pick your own site. When we arrived we almost had the park to ourselves, but within a couple of hours quite a few other travellers arrived.
Fraser Range Station was the first station to be founded on the Nullarbor, has no neighbours and first settled in 1872. Several of the original buildings are still standing. Apparently the largest hardwood forrest in the world surrounds Fraser Range Station and the dense hardwood eucalyptus forest is composed of blackbutts, salmon gums and gimlets. Pretty awesome.
Luckily the day’s temperature did not reach the predicted 45C. The temp reached 38C at about 11am local time near Caiguna and when we arrived at Fraser Range Station it was a cool 25C. The breeze overnight was cool and when we got up in the morning it was a very comfortable 16C.
Another great place to stop at.
