Elliston – South Australia

After spending Christmas in Coffin Bay we headed west to Elliston known to be at the very heart of the wild West Coast for New Year’s Eve.

While in Elliston we stayed at the Elliston Caravan Park which is approximately one kilometre west of town. It was quite busy when we arrived but the Park Managers Rich and Fiona made sure that we found a site where we felt comfortable with the van. The reason being that the site that had been set aside for us remained occupied for another night. We really appreciated Fiona’s help in finding a suitable site.

The facilities include the usual amenities, a jumping pillow and a swimming pool. The showers and toilets could do with a makeover, but were kept clean at all times. The park does provide free Wi-Fi but unfortunately it wasn’t working most days which seems to be a common problem in other areas we have visited in SA. The Telstra phone reception was fine, so we were able to speak with family on New Year’s Day.

The historical Jetty is only 100 metres from the park so we headed off for a spot of Squid fishing after we set up. Unfortunately it seemed the Squid were again not interested in coming home with us for New Year’s Eve dinner. Never mind Graeme will just keep on trying.

Elliston is situated on Waterloo Bay and has some of the most spectacular, scenic, rugged limestone cliffs we have seen so far along the Great Australian Bight. Make sure you take the clifftop drives. One takes you from town to Little Bay and the other leads to Anxious Bay a little to the west. They are both pretty special but the Anxious Bay drive also incorporates some different sculptures which are dotted along the cliffs. This drive also takes you past Blacks surf spot and seemed to be a pretty busy place on New Year’s Day.

On another day we walked along the beach into town. Once in town we headed to the Information Centre to pick up some brochures about the area. The Information Centre boasts one of the biggest murals in Australia depicting the life of Elliston through the years, taking in both the maritime and agricultural heritage.

If you like to know more about the history of the town make sure you pick up the Elliston Township History Tour brochure which takes you on a stroll around town which shows where some of the earliest buildings are or at least were.

In town is a Friendly Grocer grocery store where you can pick up just about everything you need. Next door is the Bakery and across the road is a Pub which also has accommodation and serves meals.

We meet some incredible people along the way and many times we swap phone numbers with other travellers. Some send us messages giving us the heads up about places of interest that we may enjoy exploring along the way.

What a great stay.
