Eighty Mile Beach – WA

Approximately half way between Port Hedland and Broome is Eighty Mile Beach. We decided to stay here for a few nights to break the long trip to Broome from Point Samson.

Eighty Mile Beach Entrance

The turnoff to Eighty Mile Beach is well sign posted and there is no way you can miss it. The road in from the highway is 10km of red dirt road before you reach Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park. The road had just been graded so it was an easy drive but wow that fine red dust got onto everything. Luckily not inside the van.

At the end of the red dirt road all you will find is the beach and the caravan park and another wow. We were so impressed when we drove up and over the little rise. In front of us was a vision of a beautiful green well cared for oasis – Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park.

The sites are large and grassed and most have reasonable shade. Some have a little more grass and shade than others but from what we could see every site was easy to access. The park has over 150 sites powered and un-powered and each site has access to good drinking water.

Other features:
• Clean amenities
• Dump point
• Laundries
• BBQ’s
• Camp kitchen
• Fish cleaning table
• Vehicle washbay
• Outside shower (for use when you come off the beach)
• Great TV reception
• Telstra reception
• General store at reception that has all the little necessities you may have run out of and a great evening take-away menu.

We have stayed in many parks over the last 12 months and we were extremely impressed with the amount of care that is given to keep this park in “ship-shape” condition.

We loved the fact that we were so close to the beach and amazed by the very enthusiastic fishing folks who came prepared with quad bikes for beach driving to spend their mornings or evenings fishing from the beach. Naturally we tried our hand at beach fishing and had two days of fun. One day casting various lures to the entertainment of local knowledge fisher folk and one day bait fishing. Yet again we left without taking any fish home.

The days were very hot and the blue water looked incredibly inviting for a swim. We nearly did before we saw one of the locals swimming along within a metre or two from the water’s edge. Yep one of the local sharks, this one was about 2M in length and came swimming through the water where we had just been standing. This shark, and a slightly bigger one apparently do their laps of the beach each day at high tide. A very colourful local who has fished the area for 50 years said when asked if there had ever been a shark attack “Nope never had any one bitten”. Probably true, but we thought it was way too close for comfort especially as we saw it both days.

When the tide goes out at Eighty Mile Beach you can walk out on the tidal flat for a few hundred metres and if the tides and times are right you can get some really great sunset photos. Oh and the shells on the beach are a shell collectors delight. Shells, shells and more shells.

We were warned that there had been a locust plague come through and although these were minimal, there were loads of dragon flies.

Even so Eighty Mile Beach is pretty awesome and can tick a lot of boxes if you are into beach fishing, relaxing and photography.
