Derby – WA

We stopped in Derby a town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia at the Kimberley Entrance Caravan Park which is situated in the centre of town. It’s a beautiful and spacious caravan park and offers a huge selection of spacious and shady powered and unpowered sites to suit everyone on a Kimberley camping trip.

It really was awesome and on top of it all the sunset was brilliant. We were lucky that at the time we arrived the park was not very busy. But I can see how it must get quite full during those busy periods. It’s an easy stroll into town if you want to pop into the local supermarket or butcher to stock up.

The Derby caravan park boasts a range of services and facilities.

Pet friendly

Power/unpowered sites

TV reception

Telstra Wi-Fi (if you travel with your own modem)

Three large amenity blocks

Laundry facilities

Shaded BBQ areas

Camp kitchen

Two x cassette dump points

Long and short – term caravan & camper trailer storage

Sites available for large rigs & bus/coaches

It really is the entrance to the wonderful Kimberley’s.

Even though we stayed for a very short time…..next time we are going to stay and linga longer….Derby has some fascinating history.

Check out the Boab Prison Tree, sure to give you goosebumps. Well it did for me. The story goes that this is where they shackled prisoners, indigenous prisoners and used as the local lock up. Some say it’s a myth and that there is no evidence that this happened. But no matter what it still made me feel sad for those who may have been shackled as a prisoner on this particular Boab Tree.

If you visit the Boab Prison Tree there is no way you will miss Myalls Bore and Water Trough.  A massive 120 metre long trough built in the early 1900’s which provided water for up to 1,000 head of cattle at a time.  Pretty impressive for its time.

Check out the Boab Trees that line the main street. Derby is well worth a stopover when travelling through the Kimberley region of WA.
