We have left the Big Boabs and are now in big Barra 🐟 and big Croc 🐊country.
We had been told a trip into the Daly River is a ‘must do’ when visiting the region south of the Litchfield National Park (NT).
So off we went on another adventure. As per usual our initial stay of a couple of nights quickly turned into many nights. We stayed at Lee and Jenny’s Bush Camp and we can certainly say it’s a hidden oasis in the NT. Lee and Jenny provide a very well maintained camp and are always on hand if you need a little help with anything.
There are two turnoffs from the Stuart Highway between Darwin and Katherine, one at Adelaide River and the other is not far from Hayes Creek. Then it’s about 110km of sealed road to Lee and Jenny’s Bush Camp.
It’s just across the road from the banks of the Daly River and close to the public boat ramp. This camp is very popular with anyone wanting to get away and do some serious ‘Top End – NT’ Barra fishing. The Daly River is especially known for catching big Barra and also large King Threadfin Salmon.
If you’re into ‘happy hour’ 🍾🥂then you will enjoy the evening gatherings overlooking the river while other travellers share daily adventures and photos including ‘the one that didn’t get away’.
During the day we would wander over to the shady ‘happy hour’ nook and do some 👀🐊 croc spotting. It was from here that we would often see a large 4 metre croc lazing in the sun on the opposite bank of the river.😮😲We were told it only has three legs, but nobody could confirm that for us and we were definitely not going to go over and find out. Ha ha ha 😂🤣
One afternoon we were excited as we watched this large croc slide off the bank and swim lazily to another sandy stop. Wow who would imagine being able to sit in the shade and enjoy watching nature in its own environment. Mind you we were up high so no problems about getting nipped, or as someone recently said, “A croc this size, they don’t bite you, they eat you,”.
Unfortunately because of the recent dry wet season no one is catching many fish at the moment 😟. We were told that the majority of fishers are doing the catch and release exercise because most of the Barra are undersize. Graeme has been down on the river pontoon with his fishing rod and a collection of lures practicing his casting skills. Yep, you guessed it, no Barra for us… so it’s still chicken, steak or sausages or whatever else we can throw together.
