Croydon is in the heart of the Gulf Savannah, on the Savannah Way. This quaint town is full of heritage buildings. We stayed overnight at the Croydon Caravan Park. The only one in town. We were able to have a drive through powered site and the price seems to be a regular $30 per night all year round.
Croydon History
The park is convenient surrounded by heritage listed buildings which includes the Police Sergeant’s Residence (1898), Police Station and Gaol (1896) Court House (1887) and the Croydon Town Hall (1890). The buildings are open to the public and entry is free. Unfortunately by the time we had finished setting up camp the buildings were closed.
During the gold rush era Croydon, like many outback goldfields, had quite a large Chinese population. We took time the next morning to take a walk through the Chinese temple archaeological site. Life in the outback in those days was truly hard.
Kerosene lamps lit the streets during the gold rush days. Today throughout the streets replicas of these lamps shine brightly to welcome the evening. Four of these are still the original lamps but have now been modified for electrical lighting.
The sunsets in the outback are awesome and the evening in Croydon was no exception. It was great watching the sunset behind The Club Hotel. Built in 1887, the pub retains it’s history for everyone to enjoy.
If you do have time ask about the heritage walk trail. It looks great and It’s a shame we ran out of time to do it.
