Cowra is a riverside town and is situated in the beautiful Lachlan Valley. The town itself is absolutely charming and a delight to walk through. It’s surrounded by vineyards and various agricultural crops and the prettiest countryside. We have travelled through this region a couple of times and enjoy the rolling hills and river flats.
The day we arrived we were in the middle of a massive dust storm with about 500m visibility. But with a weather change overnight the next day proved to be a stunner with clear blue skies and mild temperatures.
We stayed at the Cowra Showgrounds which is on the opposite side of the river from the town’s shopping area. We spent a very comfortable couple of days at the showgrounds.
💲 $20 per night for two adults with power and water and the Caretaker John will come by to collect your payment. He is one of those characters you really enjoy having a chat with. You can call him on 0428405245 just to make sure there are vacancies. We had absolutely no problem and counted about 10 vans around the area.
🔌 Plenty of large grassy powered sites available and some are more level than others.
🚽🚿Amenities – old but in reasonable condition and sort of clean (but remember we arrived in a windy dust storm).
👉 Laundry – has one washing machine and a small clothes line outside. But I have to be honest it is one machine I would not be washing my clothes in.
🚮 Rubbish bins
📺📱 Excellent TV and Telstra reception.
🐶 Pet friendly
👉 Special box for cans and bottles – Watch out for the guy in the rusty coloured ‘u bute ute’. If you’re outside he is sure to have a chat with you. This 84 year old pensioner collects them every morning and is another one of those characters that are a real pleasure to have a chat with.
🐴 If you’re into horses you will love this place. Its right next to the race/trotting track and areas where the horses are trained early each morning.
🚶♂️ It’s always good to stretch your legs when caravanning and we enjoyed our easy walk into town.
Just before you cross the bridge to go into town is the Cowra Visitor Information Centre on the corner of Olympic Highway and Mid-Western Highway. The gardens and parks in the area are absolutely beautiful.
👉 Inside the centre make sure you don’t miss the very impressive 9 minute hologram that recounts the tragic story of “The Cowra Breakout” a version presented by a local women Clare. Cowra was the site of the largest prisoner of war breakout when more than a thousand Japanese prisoners staged a mass escape in August, 1944. It’s very impressive.
⛩ You can also get directions to visit the Prisoner of War Camp site which we were told looks very much like it did in World War II and the Japanese Botanical Gardens and Japanese cemetery.
🚶♀️ We continued our walk over the bridge where the Lachlan River flows and into the main street of town. Everything you need is here.
🛒 The major supermarkets including Aldi , some very quaint cafes and pubs serving some enticing lunches with menus for all tastes at very reasonable prices.
💚 As mentioned before the gardens and parks in this town are just beautiful. Cowra thank you so much for making this an RV friendly town.
