COOBOWIE – SA

We are currently enjoying the Yorke Peninsula or The Coastal Way as it is also known. For those of you who don’t know this area it is the part of South Australia’s peninsula coast that looks like a boot on the map. It starts at Port Wakefield and then ends in Port Broughton and is approximately 485 kilometres. We stopped at a few of the towns before settling in for the night at a town located in the heel – Coobowie. It’s at the head of Salt Creek Bay and the beach has a rocky shoreline.

The Coobowie Caravan Park has:

🚻Old but clean amenities
👕Laundry
🚽Dump point
🐠Fish cleaning table
🍴Camp Kitchen
🔥BBQ’s
⛹️‍♀️Kids playground
🐶Pet friendly
📶Free Wi-Fi
📱Excellent TV/Telstra reception
🔌Powered site currently $27 per night for 2A
🏕Unpowered sites
🏠Villas/Cabins

There are quite a lot of semi-permanent sites which at the time of our stay weren’t occupied. The caretakers told us that even though it is very quiet at the moment they are totally booked out for Easter. Within walking distance of the park is the Coobowie pub and Coobowie Shop. There’s also a cute little craft store opposite the pub which is only open at present on Saturday and Sunday. And that’s it.

Not far from Coobowie is Yorketown which has a great Foodland, Celebration Liquor store, Butcher and Baker. Apparently the butchers in Ardrossan, Stansbury and Yorketown all stock local Yorke Peninsula meat and we are looking forward to enjoying what we have bought.
When you drive from Coobowie to Edithburgh you can see the Wattle Point Wind Farm which looks very impressive. Wind farms always remind me of something from ‘War of the Worlds’. Since we arrived we have experienced very strong winds and reading that the wind farm has the highest average wind speeds on mainland Australia does not surprise us.

So as not to take up with too many words I will write explanations to the photos. Make sure you check them out to see what we have seen. From here we will go to the ‘Toe’ of the peninsula and then back up the shin to Port Broughton. In the meantime still lots of towns we want to visit and maybe a chance to enjoy some of the renowned local fishing.

Below are a list of others places we have visited that may be of interest to you:
