Coffs Harbour on the Coffs Coast of NSW has so many attractions to see and things to do. A morning walk at the marina is a great way to start any day.
At the marina there is a Fishermen’s Co Op that has fresh fish and prawns straight from the local trawlers and a collection of shops and coffee outlets. In the harbour area just outside the marina there is a timber jetty and a sheltered beach that are very popular for walking. There is a dog friendly beach on the Northern side between the entrance of Coffs Creek and the harbour.
The breakwater/breakwall that protects the marina’s boats from the ocean storms also connects the land to Mutton Bird Island. A formed path goes over the top of the island giving you access to a couple of viewing platforms. This is a great spot to watch the Humpback whales as they cruise past.
We decided to explore a little of the Bellinger Valley, especially the Promised Land on the Never Never Creek. If you travel 35 km away from Coffs Harbour you will find the town of Bellingen in the beautiful Bellinger Valley. Although the valley is rich in timber and agricultural history, the purpose of our visit was to explore the locality known as The Promised Land.
From Coffs we drove along the rich dairy river flats besides the Bellinger River. We could not help comment to each other about how green and lush all the paddocks are. This was quite a difference compared to the harsh drought conditions we experienced on the other side of the Great Dividing Range a few weeks earlier.
From the main street in Bellingen we took the road over the low level bridge across the Bellinger River, past the showgrounds and followed the Gleniffer road that runs between Tuckers Knob and the Never Never into The Promised Land.
Following the sealed road which almost runs beside the Never Never Creek, we eventually reached the wooden bridge and a few of the swimming holes the locals and visitors enjoy. This bridge takes you over the creek to a parking area.We walked the few metres back to the bridge to take some amazing photos of the creek and surrounding areas.
The flowing waters of the creek were crystal clear and each of the pools revealed the colours of their smooth river stones. It’s not hard to understand how popular these pools are during the warmer months.
As the water flows through the shaded forested areas it remains at a constant ‘cool’ temperature. If you are lucky you may see a Platypus or two. But unfortunately for us we did not see any during our visit. A great place to visit and enjoy and no doubt it will change constantly during different seasons.
If you are looking at stopping in the Bellingen area check out the Showgrounds as they offer some great sites. We were told that a power and water site is around $25 per night and that the caretaker comes around in the early evening to collect your payment. It looked quite nice with toilet and shower facilities and is just a short walk across the low level bridge from the town.
Bellingen town has so much to offer everyone. It has a great café and restaurant strip along with other specialty stores. Make sure you check out the Yellow Shed and the old Butter Factory.
