We enjoyed a couple of nights FREE camping beside the Calliope River in Queensland. Last year when we stopped here we were able to stop over on the North and were very much looking forward to it. But unfortunately it was closed for maintenance so we drove over to the South side. It still proves to be a very popular place for a 48 hour stopover and we were lucky enough to snag what we thought was a pretty awesome spot.
Graeme even tried his hand at fishing, but yet again nothing came home to our dinner table. Both sides have toilets which are supposedly cleaned each day and lots of bins. They were emptied the day we arrived. The area has great Telstra and TV reception, well at least for us it was spot on.
If you feel like stretching your legs then make sure you go and take a walk to the Calliope Historical Village which shows some of the old buildings and gives you more information about the surrounding area.
Thanks again to the Gladstone Regional Council for providing such a great stop for travellers.
PS: Make sure you also read the Crocodile warning signs, although some of the locals we met will tell you they have not been sighted for some time. Oh well you won’t find us swimming in the river anytime.
Well that’s enough for now.
