WA is a State that we have now travelled through a couple of times and absolutely love. The free camps provided are some of the best we have come across. Here are our list of free camps we can recommend if your travelling from Broome to Kununurra.
We are heading towards Kununurra and our first stop after Broome was for a toilet break at the free camp of Nillibubbica a 24 hr Rest Area. There were already a couple of campers who obviously looked like they were set for the day. It’s not one of the bigger camps but has what you need as you will see in the attached photos.
It was still quite early in the day so we decided to move on to Ellendale 24 Hr Rest Area, which was approximately another 200kms. We arrived around 2.30 pm and the place was starting to fill up very quickly. By the time the sun went down there would have been around 25 vans.
👉Hybrid flushing toilets (maybe byo paper) 🚻
👉Bins 🚮
👉Dump point 🚽
👉Picnic tables and fire pits for BBQ ♨️
👉No water ❌
👉No power 🔌
👍We were also lucky to have Telstra connection.📲
Yesterday after leaving our overnighter at Ellendale we headed to Fitzroy Crossing to fill up with fuel (diesel 175.9).
Next we stopped in at Ngumban Cliffs which is a favourite stop that we had enjoyed on our previous trip in 2018.
We would have stayed but it was only 10 am and we felt we could move on to our next stop Mary Pool.
With plenty of time and no need to rush we decided to pull into Mary Pool around lunchtime. We were amazed at the amount of vans already here and set up for the day/evening. Luckily we found what we think was a pretty awesome spot right next to the Mary River……….but like so many places there is not much water in this River at this time.
Both areas have the usual

👉Bins 🚮

👉Fire pits ♨️
👍Again we were lucky to have Telstra connection.📲
👉Pet friendly – Free range cattle through your site 🐮🐂😅
👉No water ❌
👉No power 🔌
Leycesters and Spring Creek and Dunham River – 3 more fabulous free camps before heading to Wyndham or Kununurra along the Great Northern Highway
Here are a few more free camps along the Great Northern Highway heading towards Wyndham and Kununurra in WA.
👉Leycesters Rest Area 24 HR
👉Spring Creek – this place can get quite busy because you can leave your van and go and explore the Bungle Bungle.
👉Dunham River Rest Area 24HR – We stopped here for lunch but had we been looking for a free camp for the night and in our opinion we would have chosen this one. Reason being it’s not so busy as Spring Creek and had everything you need.
They all have:
👉Hybrid flushing toilets (maybe byo paper) 🚻
👉Bins 🚮
👉Dump point 🚽
👉Fire pits ♨️
👉Pet friendly
👉No water ❌
👉No power 🔌
We also stopped to get fuel at Doon Doon Roadhouse with an upgraded Caravan Park. Powered sites were $35.
