Barrier Highway – Jamestown SA to Broken Hill – NSW

After leaving Jamestown we headed towards the NSW border and Broken Hill. I saw on Wikki Camps that there were a couple of donation camps along the Barrier Highway, so we decided to investigate. Along the way we saw quite a few Emus and Kangaroos 🦘 and lots of Goats🐐🐐 🐐.👇

👉Manna Hill – Well this is almost a deserted ghost town. I say almost as there were a few people roaming around. I also read that it has a population of 6 but each Anzac Day grows tenfold. We saw an older chap watering the Rosemary 🌿bushes around the war memorial and wanted to chat but he was gone before we knew it. Apparently it’s the only dawn 🌄 service on the Barrier Highway between Peterborough and Broken Hill, meaning that Anzac Day forms an important event for the Manna Hill town folk.

💰There is a donation camp next to the pub and reviews on Wikki are mixed as to whether the pub is open or closed. It was around lunchtime on Saturday when we arrived and the pub was definitely closed. Obviously the proprietor opens when she is able to and why not. I bet it’s open on Anzac Day 😄🍻.There’s lots of quirky memorabilia around the pub and we have read that inside is even better.

👉Across the road from the pub is a heritage listed Railway 🚂Station that still looks in very good condition but is closed off to the public with a ‘No Trespassing’ sign. Manna Hill is located on an old stock route and the town also supported local gold mining activities.

Olary – Due to a fire 🔥 in 2015 this town is now virtually a 👻ghost town. Unfortunately the historic buildings and cottages that once stood proudly in the town are now all but rubble. Looking at the pub you may think it’s still open, but it’s not and there was no one around.

👉Cockburn and Border Gate Roadhouse (SA/NSW)
Situated in the small town of Cockburn you will find the Border Gate Roadhouse on the Barrier Highway. Great for an overnighter. Make sure you also try the delicious toasties🥪 and the warm welcome from the friendly owners.

There is also a Caravan Park in town opposite the Coburn (and yes that is the right spelling 😉) Hotel which according to the locals is the first and last hotel 🍻 in South Australia. This is a community run pub and well worth a visit 👍.
