After a long day driving we were so happy to reach the remote Barkly Homestead. There were quite a few caravanners and campers doing exactly as we were and checking in. The place looked awesome but was very busy and I think we were one of the lucky ones to find a powered site as it already looked quite packed in.
All the powered and water sites are drive through which makes it so easy to stay hooked up which just about everyone does. Just be careful if your rig is high as there are some very low branches on some of the sites. Most of the powered sites would benefit from some close attention from an Arborist.
Barkly Homestead has everything you can possibly think of. The powered sites are dirt and the area can become a bit of a dust bowl it is a little oasis in the outback. • Three amenity blocks. One block has unisex ensuite type showers and toilets. • Laundry • Dump point • Large unpowered grassed areas for trailer camping and tents • Camp kitchen with BBQ • Cabins • Swimming pool • Great TV reception and free Wi-Fi (but it’s very slow) • Telstra reception available although weak • Bar and restaurant • Souvenirs galore of Barkly Station • Take-away burgers and barista coffees and more.
The original intention of staying for one night very easily turned into two nights. We needed a little down time to recoup after previous adventures topped off by our push to arrive before sunset. We also felt we would like to get back on top of our communications with friends and family and other contacts as we don’t always have internet connection at some stops. It was interesting watching how the full park was quickly transformed by around 10 am the next morning to be almost deserted. But it started to fill up again and before we knew it the sites around us had filled with more travellers.
It always amazes us as to how many people are travelling these days and no it’s not just ‘grey nomads’. There are so many families with 2 or 3 or sometimes more kids and the young couples doing the lap plus the backpackers, singles and older retires. At the time of our stay we paid $38 for 2 people for a site with power and water.
Well that’s enough for now.
