Arno Bay – South Australia

Before we started travelling in SA we hadn’t heard of this peaceful part of the Spencer Gulf called Arno Bay, but started hearing about it from other travellers. Many said that this was a nice place to stay before leaving the Eyre Peninsula. How happy we are that we listened to their advice.

Arno Bay

The Arno Bay Caravan Park is located right on the beach front and we ended up staying for a week on the pay 6 stay 7 night deal. When you choose this option you also receive a complimentary bottle of good Arno Bay Shiraz (thanks Steve and Leanne). The site we had was fabulous, because being on the corner gave us a great view of the Jetty and ocean. But to be fair if the park was booked out we probably would have lost some of the view in front of us.

The park also hosts BBQ evenings on Saturdays, Fish and Chip nights on Wednesdays, craft afternoons on Thursday, a Happy Hour and games on Fridays and free pancakes on Sunday mornings. It has the usual amenities, laundry, and camp kitchen, bbq’s, dump point and fish cleaning table. Oh and they have a beautiful rose garden and you are welcomed to pick a bunch of roses for your van.

From the park it’s a short walk to the Jetty where Graeme spent a few hours each day, along with other hopeful people, “fishing”. Unfortunately the fish were not biting and we only ended up with a few whiting and a squid but Graeme enjoyed the challenge each time.

Turnbull Park is right next door to the Caravan Park and it has playgrounds and shelters including more BBQ’s with the best view out to sea. You will also find the “Super Shed” which is full of interesting historic and present day information about the area and highlights some of the community projects.

Within walking distance you will find a general store/café and across the road is the historic pub where you can hang out with locals and enjoy a cold beer or one of the great meal deals on offer throughout the week.

Our week in Arno Bay was very relaxing. We spent time walking along the pristine sandy beaches and did the 1.4 kilometre boardwalk through the mangroves beside the tidal creek just a few hundred metres from the park.

A short 30 minute drive from Arno Bay is the town of Cowell which we visited on one of the days. We enjoyed walking through the main street of town and noticed many of the buildings which date back to the 1800’s. Cowell’s Franklin Harbour boasts a reputation of having one of the best fishing spots in South Australia.

We couldn’t resist having some fish and chips for lunch at the local bakery before doing some vegie and meat shopping. I must say Cowell has a great butcher and it was impossible for us to resist buying some delicious looking steak and a few sausages to take back to the van.

Thanks Leanne and Steve for making our stay one that we will remember.
