Kimba – South Australia

Kimba is located half way across Australia, between the East and West coasts on the Eyre Highway. The town lies 97 Kilometres East of Wudinna and 89 kilometres West of Iron Knob in South Australia and its surrounds are another great photo opportunity.

It was about lunchtime on Saturday when we arrived at Kimba. The wide streets seemed deserted. The town gave us the feeling of it being a very beautiful rural space with a lot of civic pride. As we started our sightseeing adventures we soon realised a lot of people were playing cricket or lawn bowls or just being loyal spectators.

The reason we had Kimba on our itinerary was to view the town’s silo which was completed in September, 2017. We have become followers of Silo Art, as it always looks amazing.

Just around the corner from the painted silo you will find “The Big Galah”, an eight metre high statue. Not too far out of town is Whites Knob which boasts the best view in town. It’s also home to the very large artistic sculptures of Edward John Eyre and an indigenous tracker. Eyre is the first man known to have crossed our continent from Sydney to the Swan River in Perth.

On the way back from Whites Knob we stopped at the Recreation Reserve for lunch. This is where the cricket was being played on the oval and next door afternoon lawn bowls at the Bowling Club. The Recreation Reserve is a great long or short term camping area. For a donation you can stay for a mximum of 7 days. There are toilets, coin operated showers, great barbecues and a RV dump point. What a great place and so encouraging for caravanners and campers to stay a night or more. There is also another nice site for short term parking near ‘The Big Galah’.

Well done Kimba. It’s so nice to see such wonderful facilities for travellers to stop overnight. So if you do stop by don’t forget to leave a donation.
